Get To Know Mary

Reverend Mary is an Ordained Minister, School Counselor, Educator, and Community Volunteer. She and her husband Dr. L. Keith Madison have called West Des Moines home for over twenty years. The proud parents of three adult children and one delightful granddaughter.

Mary Madison has strong beliefs in the rights embedded in the humanity of every person: I believe voting is a fundamental right for all citizens of this great country of ours.

There is much to do.
This is where I would like to start as your representative:

I plan to engage the community in listening sessions. Learning and bringing the issues of importance to you, my neighbors into the legislative work I plan to do.

Let’s be clear that West Des Moines is a great place to call home! Celebrating our diversity and shared values will only continue to make all of Iowa a great place to live!

My PRIORITIES

I support creative ways and incentives to grow small businesses.

I support apprenticeships, a living wage, and safe, affordable child care. All of which strengthen working families.

  • I believe working together we can have a strong public school; fully funded and supporting the rights of teachers, students, and parents working toward quality education. I believe public dollars should be spent on an already underfunded public schools. Let’s support teachers, students, and parents with much needed funding. Provide incentives to increase the number of qualified applicants going into the teaching field. Expand universal pre-K to include 3-year-olds and test for radon in schools.

  • I believe mental health relief and redesign is a right and a necessity for families whose loved ones are suffering from mental illness.

I believe mental health services should be increased and patients in crisis should be treated with dignity and compassion. The aim is to increase the number of beds available and the number of mental health caregivers trained in the field.

  • I believe we are nothing without an affordable, accessible health care system. De-privatize Medicaid. Make reproductive health care a priority. Expand Mental health and Disability services. Fair wages and training for in-home caregivers for the elderly and disabled.

  • Clean Water and Soil: Prohibit eminent domain for hazardous pipelines. Test water levels more frequently so that chemical thresholds for toxic forever-chemicals in our waterways are well below recommended levels.

I believe protection for the quality of our water and soil should be a major concern for all of us. I believe we are better together bridging the gap for and with the most vulnerable among us.

  • Reproductive Justice links reproductive rights with the social, political, and economic inequalities that affect a woman’s access to reproductive health care services. Core components of reproductive justice include equal access to safe abortion, affordable contraceptives, comprehensive sex education, and freedom from sexual violence. The legacy of medical experimentation and inadequate healthcare coupled with social determinants has exacerbated African American women’s complex relationship with healthcare systems. In addition, the social determinants of health associated with institutionalized and interpersonal racism, including poverty, unemployment, and residential segregation, may make African American women more vulnerable to disparate sexual and reproductive health outcomes. We cannot remain silent.

  • Most of my community volunteer work is through the interfaith organization AMOS, A Mid-Iowa Organizing Strategy, and its Juvenile Justice team. The program is called Let’s Talk. it is in six Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) and it works!

Let’s Talk empowers students through mediation and talking circles to improve students’ positive communication and problem-solving skills, keeping students on the road to success in school and life. Helping to reduce school suspensions.

It’s a great program that’s helping our schools, students, teachers and parents.

  • Quick answer for a long history of service-
I have been actively working for the community for many, many years and sought out roles where I can be a positive, hard-working change. Like-minded people don’t shrug, look around and ask, “Who will do it?” I want to put that same strong ethic to work for you.

    Kathrine Choice Burno says:
“Mary Madison would be an excellent representative of Iowans in the 31st District. With integrity, she would serve her constituents, and with diligence she would work hard to meet the needs and represent the rights of voters in her District. And, as the servant-leader she already is, Mary Madison would be the first to roll up her sleeves to get the job done. Vote for Mary Madison!”

    A.S.Wells says:
“As young undergraduate members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, Mary Madison, and I worked together to successfully complete community service projects and sorority tasks. Her laser focus, even then, broadened my attitude toward and deepened my understanding of the value of community of service. She was a leader, a team member, and a motivator. Through the years her leadership skills, her varied professional experience, and diverse volunteer work in community service have been put to excellent use to serve humanity and have prepared her to serve as a very highly qualified elected representative of the 31st District in Iowa.”
